Medical Assistant

Position Description

A nonexempt position responsible for performing a variety of clinical and clerical duties while adhering to Inspira Health Network's Mission, Vision, and Values. These duties include but are not limited to providing clinical and supportive services to patients, providers, and staff, greeting patients, creating or verifying, and updating patient insurance information. Specimen collection, injections/vaccines, entering appropriate information into state database, preparing for exams (including complete vital signs), patient history collection, performing screening procedures per provider guidelines, relaying instructions to patients, and assisting with other specific practice procedures. Required to follow IMG workflow and guidelines, to include participation in daily practice huddles. May be assigned to cover other IMG offices based on staffing needs. Must have the ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures. Must maintain a pleasant and professional image and demonstrate compassion and empathy when dealing with others. Must acquire the ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks in a timely manner.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) required.
  • Medical assistant diploma and certification from an accredited vocational institution or a community college required.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in a Medical Practice preferred.
  • Phlebotomy and EKG experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with drug administration, specifically with vaccine and medication injections preferred.
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) experience preferred.

Certification/Licensure

  • Active Medical Assistant Certification or Registry required from one of the following nationally recognized certifying organizations:
    • American Association of Medical Assistant (AAMA)
    • National Healthcare Association (NHA)
    • National center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
    • American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)
    • National Association of Health Professionals (NAHP)
    • National Certification of Medical Association (NCMA)
    • Registration from American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Must maintain certification/registry in good standing throughout employment
  • Active American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR/ BLS certification

Position Description

Clinical and Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Duties may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow in Electronic Medical Record
  • Accompanying patients to exam/procedure room
  • Assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  • Collecting patient history.
  • Performing screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures, charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls and providing pertinent information.

Clerical Responsibilities

Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned:

  • Chart preparation; sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/radiology reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
  • Completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics.
  • Obtaining prior authorizations or pre-certifications, completing and submitting tasks according to office protocol, managing and updating charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.

Environmental Responsibilities

Fulfills environmental responsibilities:

  • Setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols.
  • Cleaning/ sterilizing exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control.
  • Maintaining universal precautions as per guidelines; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.

Organizational Responsibilities

Fulfills organizational responsibilities:

  • Respecting/securing patient rights and private health information (PHI); complying with HIPAA guidelines; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing concerns relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.

Clinical Medical Assisting Responsibilities

Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities in accordance with state law:

  • Medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving
  • Checking vital signs or mensuration.
  • Physical examination preparations and assistance.
  • Clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injections.
  • Prescription verifications with physician's orders.
  • Minor surgery assistance including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring.
  • Therapeutic modalities.
  • Instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, education, and home care.
  • Laboratory procedures including OSHA guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; capillary punctures and venipunctures.

Laboratory, Diagnostic & Emergency Responsibilities

Specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; electrocardiography, emergency triage, and first aid, as well as a variety of specialty practice specific procedures.

Additional practice specific duties may be assigned.
