Overview

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes faculty engaged in clinical service, teaching, and research across all aspects of large animal medicine and surgery. The department is home to the Tufts Veterinary Field Service, which promotes the health and well-being of farm animals through environmentally responsible husbandry practices, population-based preventive medicine, and targeted therapies. The Tufts Veterinary Field Service provides veterinary care for livestock and farm companion animals, supporting farm animal owners while offering veterinary students hands-on experience, knowledge, and training to prepare the next generation of large animal veterinarians.

What You'll Do

The staff veterinarian will provide high-quality general practice, medicine, and surgery services for a diverse caseload that includes approximately 2,500 equine cases, 2,000 dairy and beef cattle farm calls serving more than 40,000 animals, 2,500 small ruminant cases, 400 camelid cases, and 300 swine cases annually. Responsibilities include clinical teaching and mentoring of veterinary students during ambulatory rotations, participation in clinical rounds, and collaboration with a team of 11 clinicians and one intern. The practice is equipped with digital radiography, diagnostic ultrasound, endoscopy, a haul-in facility with stocks, and a dedicated small ruminant/swine surgical and anesthesia suite, with access to advanced specialty referral services through the Hospital for Large Animals in North Grafton. Candidates should be competent in general equine, bovine, small ruminant, and swine medicine and surgery, participate in a shared emergency and on-call rotation, and demonstrate excellent communication and client service skills. Preference will be given to candidates with experience or a strong interest in equine practice, particularly lameness evaluation and diagnosis.
