Position Summary
The Orthopedic Surgical Technician supports orthopedic surgeons and operating room teams by preparing instruments, equipment, and supplies required for orthopedic procedures. This role ensures a sterile environment, assists during surgery, and contributes to efficient, safe patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Operative Duties

  • Prepare the operating room with appropriate orthopedic instruments, implants, and equipment.
  • Verify sterility of trays, tools, and supplies; perform sterilization as needed.
  • Position and prepare patients under the direction of the surgical team.
  • Assist in setting up traction, fracture tables, power tools, and specialized orthopedic devices.
  • Review case requirements and anticipate surgeon needs specific to each procedure.

Intra-Operative Duties

  • Pass instruments, sponges, and supplies to the surgeon and assistants during the procedure.
  • Maintain strict adherence to sterile techniques and safety protocols.
  • Operate and troubleshoot orthopedic power tools and equipment.
  • Handle implants, plates, screws, and other orthopedic hardware with accuracy.
  • Monitor counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.

Post-Operative Duties

  • Assist with room breakdown, cleaning, and equipment decontamination.
  • Prepare instruments for sterilization and assemble orthopedic trays.
  • Restock surgical suites and ensure availability of implants and supplies.
  • Collaborate with OR staff to improve workflow and efficiency.


Requirements

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program preferred.
  • Certification (CST) strongly preferred; state requirements may vary.
  • Prior orthopedic OR experience highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of orthopedic instrumentation, implants, and procedures.

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent knowledge of sterile technique and infection control.
  • Ability to anticipate surgeon needs during orthopedic cases.
  • Skilled in handling power tools and specialized orthopedic equipment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
