About the Role:

The Sterile Processing Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medical instruments used in patient care. This position is responsible for the meticulous cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, and preparation of surgical instruments and medical equipment to meet stringent healthcare standards. The technician works closely with surgical teams and healthcare professionals to provide sterile supplies that are essential for successful medical procedures. Attention to detail and adherence to infection control protocols are paramount to prevent contamination and ensure patient safety. Ultimately, this role supports the overall healthcare delivery system by maintaining a sterile environment that enables optimal patient outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) within 18 months of hire/transfer.
  • Completion of a Sterile Processing Technician training program or equivalent experience in sterile processing.
  • Basic knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control, and medical terminology.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain strict adherence to safety and hygiene protocols.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and handle medical instruments safely.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a hospital or surgical center sterile processing department.
  • Familiarity with instrument tracking software and inventory management systems.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards such as those from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and the Joint Commission.

Responsibilities:

  • Decontaminate, clean, and sterilize surgical instruments and medical equipment following established protocols and safety standards.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and damage, ensuring only safe and effective tools are used in medical procedures.
  • Assemble and package sterile instruments and supplies for surgical procedures, maintaining accurate records of sterilization cycles and inventory.
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, ultrasonic cleaners, and washers, ensuring proper function and compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborate with healthcare staff to manage instrument tracking systems and respond promptly to urgent requests for sterile supplies.
