Position Overview: 

The Labor Relations Specialist is responsible for assisting with labor relations and human resources matters, gathering, collecting, and maintaining documents and records required for contract and policy development, and investigations.


General Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for handling routine labor relations and human resource inquiries related to policies, procedures, and bargaining agreements; refers complex matters to appropriate management staff.
  • Responsible for serving as the initial contact and liaison for intake and assessment of employee complaints.
  • Responsible for conducting initial interviews and gathering information on employee relations matters such as harassment, allegations, work complaints, or other concerns; informs appropriate HR staff when additional investigation is required.
  • Assists with recordkeeping related to hiring, termination, leave, transfer, and promotion, particularly as related to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), affirmative action, and diversity initiatives.
  • Responsible for collecting information and data to assess policy implications and disputes regarding benefits, working conditions, and other mitigating circumstances.
  • Responsible for conducting surveys, interviews, and other research related to human resource policies.
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of laws and regulations related to EEO, affirmative action, collective bargaining, unions, labor relations, and human resources.
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining documents and records for contract negotiations, meetings, and discussions with employees and labor organizations.
  • Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, labor relations, and employment law.
  • Oversee time-sensitive information utilizing spreadsheets extensively.
  • Performs other duties and administrative functions utilizing manual and automated office systems. 

 

Reporting Responsibilities:

This position reports to the Labor Relations Manager. 


Position Qualifications: 

  • Required a Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 3 years of progressive Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related field experience. Or a High School/GED equivalent with 8 years of related experience. 
  • SHRM-CP/ SCP or PHR certification preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a Union environment required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License. 
  • Ability to evaluate the interpersonal characteristics and demeanor of individuals or groups to respond appropriately to a variety of personalities and situations. 
  • Skill to act tactfully and professionally. 
  • Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough understanding of laws, regulations, and guidelines related to HR and contract negotiations.


Physical and Sensory Requirements:

  • Ability to evaluate information, making independent decisions.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports, correspondence, and other job-related documents for various audiences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using a variety of styles and techniques.
  • Skill to recognize and determine the need to shift priorities and resources to maximize departmental operations.
  • Ability to use all office equipment, including phones, fax, and personal computer.
  • Ability to sit in a sedentary position for an undefined amount of time.
  • Ability to bend and lift up to 15 lbs.
  • Ability to read, write, and converse in English.
