Are you a passionate Licensed Veterinary Technician looking to take your skills to the next level? Animal Specialty Center is excited to expand our specialty services with the addition of a Veterinary Dentistry & Oral Surgery department, and we are seeking an experienced, motivated, and patient-focused LVT to help us build this service from the ground up.

This is a unique opportunity to become a key member of a growing specialty team while working within one of the region's premier emergency and specialty veterinary hospitals. As part of our new service, you will play an integral role in advanced dental procedures, oral surgery, anesthesia, patient care, and client education while helping establish best practices and workflows for a developing department.

Position Summary

The Dentistry & Oral Surgery Licensed Veterinary Technician provides advanced nursing care and technical support to patients undergoing dental and oral surgical procedures. This role works closely with board-certified veterinarians and specialty clinicians to ensure the highest standard of patient care throughout all phases of treatment, including diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, recovery, and client communication.

Responsibilities

Patient Care & Nursing

• Perform and document complete patient assessments.
• Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
• Provide exceptional nursing care to hospitalized and outpatient dental patients.
• Monitor patient comfort and advocate for pain management needs.
• Educate clients on dental health, treatment plans, home care, and discharge instructions.

Dentistry & Oral Surgery

• Assist clinicians with advanced dental and oral surgical procedures.
• Perform dental radiographs and ensure diagnostic-quality imaging.
• Prepare patients for dental procedures, including positioning, instrumentation, and aseptic preparation.
• Maintain dental equipment and operatories to ensure safe and efficient workflow.
• Assist with oral examinations, charting, extractions, biopsies, maxillofacial procedures, and other specialty dentistry services.
• Maintain accurate dental records and treatment documentation.

Anesthesia

• Induce, intubate, monitor, and recover patients undergoing dental and oral surgical procedures.
• Utilize advanced anesthetic monitoring equipment.
• Recognize and respond to anesthetic complications.
• Administer anesthesia and sedation under veterinary supervision.
• Develop individualized anesthetic monitoring plans for complex cases.

Imaging & Diagnostics

• Obtain and interpret diagnostic-quality dental radiographs.
• Assist with CT imaging and other advanced diagnostic procedures when indicated.
• Collect and process laboratory samples.
• Maintain and troubleshoot dental imaging equipment.

Surgical Assistance

• Prepare surgical suites and maintain aseptic technique.
• Assist clinicians during oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures.
• Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and packs.
• Ensure proper sterilization and infection control practices.

Equipment & Inventory

• Maintain dental units, handpieces, radiology equipment, and monitoring devices.
• Assist with ordering and inventory management of dental supplies and instruments.
• Ensure regulatory and safety compliance within the department.

Qualifications

Required

• Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology Program.
• Current Veterinary Technician License (LVT).
• Strong anesthesia and patient monitoring skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced specialty environment.
• Commitment to exceptional patient care and client service.

Preferred

• Specialty, referral, or emergency hospital experience.
• Previous veterinary dentistry experience.
• Experience with dental radiography.
• Familiarity with advanced anesthesia techniques and monitoring equipment.
• Interest in pursuing advanced dental training and professional development.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to safely restrain patients of varying sizes.
• Visual and manual dexterity necessary for anesthesia monitoring, dentistry instrumentation, and patient care.
