Vehicle Safety Component Test Engineer

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Automotive Safety System and Component Test Engineering
    • Plan, coordinate, execute, and support system and component level testing
      - Pre-Test: Create vehicle safety test plan / checklist, coordinate with requestor, coordinate with technician team
      - Test: attend test, confirm test setup conditions, and run test (in-person)
      - Post-test: Collect data, post-process data, analyze data, conduct post-test vehicle/component teardowns and inspections
    • Generate technical reports of test performance results
    • Package test report and data set for transmission to requestor
  • System and component test scope responsibilities:
    • Test Methods : R&D, Regulatory, and Consumer Metrics
    • Pedestrian Protection Impacts (lower leg, upper leg, headform)
    • FMVSS 201u – Upper Interior Impacts (FMH)
    • FMVSS 226 – Ejection Mitigation (EJM)
    • Airbag Deployments
  • Utilize, maintain, and coordinate calibration of the following equipment:
    • Hybrid Compressed gas-powered cylinder test rig (impact test rig)
    • DAS – Data Acquisition System
    • High Speed Video capture
    • 3D Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM)
    • 3D Imaging Laser / Scanner
    • Various Sensors/transducers (accelerometer, potentiometer, load cell, LVDT etc)
  • Develop system and component test processes and procedures
    • Implement process improvements for current procedures
  • Travel possible, approximately 5% of the time domestically or internationally

HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Solid foundational understanding of mechanical engineering principles
    (kinematics, kinetics, material properties, strength of materials)
  • Foundational understanding of automotive structure and components (ideal)
  • Foundational knowledge of automotive component testing (ideal)
    • Testing Methodology/Modalities with respect to:
      - FMVSS, US-NCAP, IIHS, Latin NCAP, ECE, EuroNCAP
    • Test Data Acquisition and Post-processing
      - Knowledge of sensors and transducers
      - Knowledge and troubleshooting skills for Data Acquisition Systems
    • Test Data High Speed Video Acquisition and Post-processing
      - Knowledge of high-speed cameras setup
      - Knowledge and troubleshooting of high-speed video acquisitions systems
    • Using test data analysis software and tools is ideal but not mandatory
      - National Instruments DIAdem, Altair Hyperworks, MS Excel, etc
  • Exhibit strong data analysis skills, attention to detail, and logical problem solving
  • Exhibit can-do attitude and approach their work with high level of determination
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    - Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate integrity
    - Ability to work independently and with others.
    - Work in a hands-on test environment
  • Self-motivator with a drive to get things done despite challenges and obstacles
  • Excellent and effective communication skills
    (verbal, email, phone call, engineering reports, etc)
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Proficient time management and organization skills

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

  • BSME; Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar engineering discipline)
  • 0-3 years of engineering experience
