About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Design Manager to join a leading engineering contractor, working on prestigious National Grid and SSE projects. This hybrid position offers the flexibility of working from home with the option to attend our offices in Glasgow or Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and coordinate the design management of critical infrastructure projects, ensuring seamless integration across multidisciplinary teams. The initial contract is for 6 months, with a view to extend, and is offered on an outside IR35 basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Management: Oversee and manage the design process for National Grid and SSE projects, ensuring that all designs meet the required standards and specifications.
  • Coordination: Coordinate designs across primary, secondary, civil, and cabling engineering teams, ensuring effective communication and integration of all design elements.
  • Project Collaboration: Work closely with the Project Manager to align design activities with project goals, timelines, and budgets.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all design activities comply with industry regulations and standards, maintaining the highest levels of quality and safety.
  • Documentation: Review and approve design documentation, technical reports, and drawings, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical guidance and support to design teams, resolving any design-related issues or challenges that may arise.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance design efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to ensure that design requirements and expectations are met.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate design-related risks, ensuring proactive management throughout the project lifecycle.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Design Management Experience: Proven experience in design management within the substation or power transmission and distribution sector is preferable.
  • Regulated Industry Experience: Essential experience in design management within a regulated industry, demonstrating a strong understanding of compliance and regulatory requirements.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of engineering design principles, electrical systems, and grid infrastructure.
  • Project Experience: Demonstrated experience working on National Grid, SSE, or similar large-scale utility projects.
  • Software Skills: Proficiency in engineering design software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar).
  • Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to various stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Leadership: Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
