Principal Electrical Engineer - Building Services (MEP Consultancy)

Salary: Around 60,000 (DOE)
Location: Birmingham (Hybrid - 3 days office / 2 days home)

A leading multi-office MEP design consultancy is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to join their growing Birmingham team. This is a key technical delivery role within a well-established consultancy known for high-quality design work, strong client relationships and a supportive culture.

The Opportunity

You'll join an established building services team of five, stepping in as the senior electrical lead on a variety of new-build projects. This position has been created to strengthen the technical delivery capability of the group, provide mentorship to junior engineers and support the transition of the local director into a more business-focused role.

This is not a business-development-driven role-however you will be client facing and trusted to represent the business professionally.

Role Highlights

  • Act as Electrical Lead on projects from concept to RIBA Stage 4a

  • Mentor and support the development of a graduate engineer (without formal line management duties)

  • Play a key role in technical delivery across multiple sectors

  • Collaborate closely with Mechanical and Sustainability teams

  • Hybrid working: 3 days in office / 2 days from home

  • Flexible 35-hour working week (early start/early finish options)

What They're Looking For

  • Strong background in Electrical Building Services design within a consultancy environment

  • Ability to lead projects, coordinate with wider teams and communicate confidently with clients

  • Experience mentoring more junior engineers

  • A collaborative mindset and a willingness to contribute to a positive team culture

Projects & Sectors

The consultancy is busy across a wide variety of sectors, with particular strength in:

  • Residential

  • Healthcare

  • Higher Education

Most work is new-build design, delivered to RIBA Stage 4a, with minimal survey work. The team also contributes to major local developments, including significant masterplan schemes and long-standing frameworks with major clients.

Culture & Benefits

The Birmingham director is highly social and involved in various industry networking and charity initiatives-team members are always welcome to join. The business actively supports CSR events, local community involvement and regular social activities.

Benefits include:

  • ~60k salary (DOE)

  • 24 days holiday + birthday off + option to exchange bank holidays

  • Hybrid working and flexible hours

  • Supportive and sociable team culture
