Core Technical SkillsStrong Virtualisation Background

  • Deep understanding of VMware vSphere/ESXi environments, including VM configuration, storage, and networking.
  • Familiarity with Proxmox VE architecture, including clustering, storage models, and native backup tools like Proxmox Backup Server.

Linux Systems Administration

  • Proxmox is Debian-based, so comfort with Linux CLI, shell scripting, and system services is essential.
  • Ability to troubleshoot boot issues, kernel modules, and hardware compatibility.

Migration Tooling & Disk Conversion

  • Experience with converting VMDK to QCOW2 or RAW formats.
  • Familiarity with tools like qemu-img, virt-v2v, or Proxmox's built-in import wizard
  • Equally able to build new Windows 2019 Servers rebuilding services and systems where needed.

Networking & Firewall Configuration

  • Understanding of virtual bridges, VLANs, and Proxmox's firewall model.
  • Ability to replicate VMware's virtual networking setup in Proxmox.

Backup & Recovery Planning

  • Knowledge of backup strategies pre- and post-migration.
  • Experience with tools like Nakivo (which supports both VMware and Proxmox) or Proxmox Backup Server.

Soft Skills & Project ReadinessPre-Migration Planning

  • Ability to map out dependencies, assess VM compatibility, and plan for downtime.
  • Use Monday.com to project manage.
  • Familiarity with licensing implications and vendor support transitions (e.g. from VMware to open-source Proxmox).

Documentation & Communication

  • Clear documentation of implementation, migration steps, rollback plans, and system changes.
  • The ability to liaise with stakeholders, especially in healthcare or charity environments where service continuity is critical and uptime must remain constant.
