The School and Role

Calthorpe Academy is a specialist school in Birmingham, providing education and support for children and young people with a range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The academy operates satellite sites at Oaklands and Belgravia, each catering to students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and other complex needs.

We are seeking dedicated Play Workers / Teaching Assistants to support students’ learning, social, and emotional development at these sites. In this role, you will work alongside teachers to deliver tailored learning activities, assist in the classroom, and support students during structured play and school trips. Your focus will be on helping students engage with the curriculum, develop independence, and achieve their individual learning goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support students in the classroom to engage with the curriculum and achieve learning outcomes.

  • Assist teachers in planning and delivering tailored learning activities.

  • Promote social interaction, communication, and emotional regulation during lessons and structured play.

  • Support students with personal care and accessibility needs where required.

  • Supervise and engage students safely during playtimes, trips, and outdoor learning.

  • Maintain records of student progress and behaviour, contributing to Individual Support Plans (ISPs).

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to enhance learning opportunities.

Oaklands and Belgravia are specialist satellite sites of Calthorpe Academy, providing tailored learning experiences for students with ASC and complex needs.

  • Oaklands: Focuses on personalised learning and developing communication, independence, and social skills.

  • Belgravia: Caters to primary-aged students with ASC, featuring structured classrooms, sensory spaces, and a curriculum designed to support learning and emotional development.
