If you have previous experience as a school caretaker, we want to hear from you! A primary school in Blackpool is looking for a dedicated School Caretaker to join our friendly and hardworking team on a temporary contract.

Caretakers play a vital role in ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the school and providing a safe and pleasant environment for our students and staff. We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work and is committed to maintaining high standards.

About the Role:

As our School Caretaker, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties related to the upkeep, security, and maintenance of the school buildings and grounds. You will be a key point of contact for site-related issues and will work closely with the School Business Manager and other staff members. We are seeking caretakers to support on temporary contracts with schools between Monday and Friday, operating term time and paid hourly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Security: Opening and closing the school premises, ensuring the site is secure, operating alarm systems, and responding to security call-outs (if applicable).
  • Maintenance: Carrying out minor repairs and maintenance tasks, such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, and basic electrical work (within competence).
  • Grounds Maintenance: Maintaining the school grounds, including litter picking, sweeping, gritting pathways in winter, and basic gardening tasks.
  • Cleaning Oversight: Monitoring the work of cleaning staff to ensure the school is clean and tidy, and potentially undertaking some cleaning duties as required.
  • Health and Safety: Ensuring the school premises are safe and comply with health and safety regulations, including carrying out risk assessments and reporting any hazards.
  • Porterage: Moving furniture, equipment, and deliveries around the school site.
  • Lettings and Events: Assisting with the setup and clear-down for school events and external lettings.
  • Waste Management: Overseeing the collection and disposal of waste and recycling.
  • General Duties: Responding to staff requests for assistance with site-related issues, maintaining records, and undertaking other reasonable duties as directed by the School Business Manager.
  • Keyholding: Being a keyholder for the school and being available for emergencies outside of normal working hours (as per contract).
What We Are Looking For

We are specifically seeking candidates with proven experience as a caretaker in a school or similar environment. You should also possess:

  • Practical skills and experience in general maintenance and DIY.
  • A good understanding of health and safety regulations relevant to a school environment.
  • The ability to work independently and manage your own workload.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive and can-do attitude.
  • Reliability, trustworthiness, and a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Physical fitness to carry out the duties of the role.
  • Basic qualifications in relevant trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical) are desirable.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
