We are working with a chemical company in Brighouse who are seeking a Quality Control Chemist to support their laboratory which is primarily involved in the development of additives for textiles.
This role will be focussed on activities that support the technical team, such as formulation, new product development (NPD) efficacy testing and reporting of data in an ISO 9001 and 14001 complaint laboratory environment.
What you’ll do:
You will be supporting an existing chemistry team which develops additives for materials specifically textiles (Cotton, Polyester. Nylon, Wool etc), to give them flame retardancy. The chemistry behind this is developed on a bespoke basis for clients depending on their needs, which can be based on performance, ecological factors, cost and other driving factors.
The role will involve formulation of chemicals on a kilogram scale to assess their properties and build a statistical analysis of their performance characteristics via laboratory testing. This will involve bench techniques of flame testing, pH, specific gravity, viscosity and solvent testing. QC will form the minority of the time while customer centric activities in NPD and Formulation will form the majority of the working day.
Your background:
This role calls for a graduate in chemistry or a related field, and we are seeking someone who has some experience of the above ideally textile testing, formulation or flame testing. Training will be provided in areas that you haven't experienced, if you are detail driven, confident, a team player and resilient then this is a role to look closely at!
We are seeking an organised and diligent individual, this role will see you working in a small team where your work will be relied upon by others and accuracy in record keeping and reporting of details will be essential. The role will for the first year be spent in a training an development cycle and as you become more grounded in the role, opportunities for progression will emerge.
Any experience of working in formulation with experience of kilo scale for example being advantageous, do note this role will involve flame testing so applicants need to work to stringent safety standards and comfortable with carrying out this kind of analysis. Further experience of working with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS's) and COSHH processes will be useful. Proficiency with MS Office, and diligence in recording data is important.
