We're working on behalf of a brilliant special school in South Bristol that are looking for an Assistant Headteacher to join the team for either after half term or from September. The position is a maternity cover post so initially is a year long contract but this can certainly lead to other opportunities at the school as well from September 2026.

The school look after a wide range of special needs & disabilities that include SLD, MLD, ASD, SEMH & Complex Needs.

The role

The Assistant Headteacher will have a reduced teaching commitment - the key stage and year group will be dependent on the successful candidate’s strengths. The Assistant Headteacher will receive dedicated leadership time as well as their PPA release time todevelopment and ensure 'quality teaching first’ and secure the smooth running of the school.

  • To deputise and undertake overall responsibility for the school in the absence of the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher.
  • To further the aims of the school and support the Headteacher in ensuring the vision of the school is communicated and clarified and to foster a culture that promotes excellence, equality and high expectations of all students and staff.
  • To share with the Headteacher a responsibility for providing quality assurance in all the school’s activities.
  • To provide for the Headteacher an overview of major school issues through a wide-ranging awareness and contact with staff, the students and their families/carers.
  • To assist the Strategic School Business Manager in promoting awareness and observation of the Health and Safety guidelines of the school and Bristol City Council
  • To contribute to the overall leadership and management of the school with specific responsibilities identified.
