Project and Minor Works Manager
Location: Cambridge
Salary: £45,000 - £50,000 per annum

The Role
As a member of the support staff, the Project and Minor Works Manager’s ultimate line manager is the Bursar, although day-to-day responsibility will be to the Director of Estates.
Job Purpose
To plan, drive and deliver projects including building alterations and improvements, refurbishments and new build capital projects, working in conjunction with the Director of Estates and externally appointed consultants as applicable.
Project Management
- Lead projects from feasibility stage, liaising with consultants (designers, cost managers etc) and the School.
- Manage contractors post-tender, act as main point of contact during construction.
- Attend all relevant meetings from pre-construction through to handover.
- Oversee construction and project costs and manage defects/snags post completion.
Minor & Planned Works
- Manage planned maintenance and improvement projects (eg decoration, flooring, fabric upgrades).
- Liaise with stakeholders to develop specifications and design options.
- Handle planning/building control applications, tenders, contracts and cost control.
- Ensure best value in terms of cost, time and quality while prioritising the operational needs of the School.
- Proactively identify necessary works and future opportunities.
Compliance
- Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety, fire and building regulations, promoting best practice in these areas.
- Manage risks, coordinate with insurers, handle warranties and maintain project documentation.
- Implement safe working practices; manage permits, RAMS and contractor compliance paperwork.
General
- Maintain accurate project records, update school electronic plans and store O&M files.
- Be proactive and flexible; respond to emergencies as required.
- Collaborate effectively with the Estates Team and support colleagues as needed
Skills and Qualifications
Education/Qualifications:
- Degree level or equivalent.
- Prince II or similar project management qualification.
- Relevant professional qualifications.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Relevant H&S qualifications eg NEBOSH or IOSH Managing Safety.
Knowledge and Experience:
- The successful candidate’s primary background could be in quantity surveying, project management, architecture or general construction but some knowledge and experience of working alongside all these professional disciplines is essential.
- Familiarity with forms of building contracts.
- An understanding of all types of building services.
- Knowledge of construction processes.
- Knowledge of energy conservation measures.
- Proven experience in managing programmes to budget and time.
- Experience of liaising with stakeholders.
- Experience in budget management.
- Experience of working in or for an educational establishment.
Skills and Abilities:
- Leads by example through professionalism, diplomacy, and a strong work ethic that goes beyond standard expectations.
- IT literate with proven skills using MS Office packages.
- Proficient in the use of AutoCAD.
- Excellent communication skills, developing and managing relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders, staff and contractors.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Confidence to manage competing priorities under own initiative.
- Ability to remain calm and show resilience under pressure.
- Ability to identify, diagnose and solve problems in good time.
- Ability to build strong working relationships in a role that involves frequent daily interactions.
