Grounds Maintenance Team Leader

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the appearance and safety of the streets, parks, and open spaces in Exeter for residents and visitors alike.

As a Team Leader, you will supervise and support Public and Green Space Operators, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and grounds maintenance across the city. This is a hands-on role that involves working outdoors in all weathers, responding to operational needs, and liaising with the public and council members.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and organise resources — including staff, equipment, and materials — to meet operational demands.
  • Supervise and support cleansing and grounds maintenance services across Exeter’s public spaces.
  • Conduct quarterly inspections of council playgrounds, reporting and arranging necessary maintenance or repairs.
  • Act as a visible ambassador for the Council, engaging with local people and businesses to help keep Exeter looking its best.
  • Work flexibly, including occasional evenings and weekends, to meet service demands.

About You

We’re looking for a confident and organised individual who thrives in a frontline, outdoor environment. You’ll have excellent problem-solving skills, experience in supervising field teams, and a solid understanding of health and safety requirements.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in cleansing, horticultural or grounds maintenance services.
  • Experience of supervising operational field staff.
  • Good communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
  • A full, valid driving licence.
  • Able to undertake daily foot patrols and physically demanding tasks in outdoor conditions.
