Role Overview


Suffolk Highways is seeking an Assistant Design Engineer to support the delivery of highway maintenance and improvement schemes as part of the wider highways design team. The contractor will work under the direction of the client and in accordance with established standards, procedures, and programmes.



Key Responsibilities


  • Assist in the development of highway maintenance schemes from defect identification to construction documentation

  • Support the design of highway improvement, traffic engineering, and active travel schemes

  • Contribute to forward programmes of highway maintenance works

  • Undertake highway condition inspections, site visits, and surveys

  • Update and maintain asset management systems

  • Produce technical reports and design outputs in line with project requirements

  • Ensure compliance with QSE, Health & Safety, and Environmental standards

  • Provide technical support to technicians as required

  • Work collaboratively with stakeholders to support project objectives


Skills & Experience Required


  • Civil Engineering degree or equivalent (HNC/HND or Foundation Degree with relevant experience considered)

  • Experience in highway maintenance and pavement treatment selection

  • Highway asset management and construction experience (ideally 5+ years)

  • Experience undertaking highway condition surveys

  • Knowledge of UK highway standards including DMRB

  • Good understanding of Health & Safety and Environmental requirements

  • Proficient in AutoCAD (Civil 3D desirable) and Microsoft Office

  • Commercial awareness in project delivery

  • Full UK/EEC driving licence
