Role Overview

The Safeguarding Social Worker role involves protecting vulnerable children or adults from abuse, neglect, and harm. You will assess risk, carry out investigations, and take actions to ensure safety. This includes working closely with other professionals such as police, health workers, and schools. The role may involve managing child protection cases, carrying out assessments, and attending court if needed.

Main Responsibilities1. Safeguarding Assessments
  • Respond to referrals where there are concerns about harm or risk.

  • Carry out assessments to understand the needs of children or adults.

  • Make decisions based on the level of risk involved.

  • Complete Section 47 enquiries (child protection) or Section 42 enquiries (adult safeguarding).

2. Case Management
  • Hold a caseload of safeguarding cases.

  • Create and review care or protection plans.

  • Visit children, families, or adults at home or in placements.

  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records.

3. Multi-Agency Working
  • Work closely with health professionals, schools, police, and others.

  • Attend strategy meetings, case conferences, and court hearings.

  • Share information and make joint decisions to protect people at risk.

4. Legal Work (mainly for children's services)
  • Attend court and give evidence if necessary.

  • Prepare detailed reports and care plans.

  • Work within legal frameworks such as the Public Law Outline (PLO) when taking cases to court.

RequirementsEssential
  • Social Work degree or equivalent (e.g., BA, MA, DipSW, CQSW).

  • Registration with Social Work England.

  • Recent experience in a safeguarding or child protection team.

  • Strong understanding of relevant laws and guidance, such as:

    • Children Act 1989 (for children's services)

    • Care Act 2014 (for adult services)

    • Working Together to Safeguard Children

    • Mental Capacity Act 2005

  • Ability to manage risk and make decisions under pressure.

  • Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
