Health & Safety Manager

Reports to: Operations Manager
Department: Environmental
Location: Harlow, Essex

Job Purpose:
The Health & Safety Manager ensures a safe and healthy environment for employees, contractors, and visitors. Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining robust health and safety programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with legislation and company standards. Promotes a proactive safety culture across all operations.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and improve company-wide Health & Safety policies and procedures.

  • Review and update risk assessments, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW), and method statements.

  • Conduct annual BCarm audits for training compliance and induction.

  • Perform site-specific risk assessments as needed.

  • Provide expertise on Health & Safety training requirements.

  • Conduct regular inspections and surveys to ensure compliance and safety.

  • Stay updated on H&S legislation and industry standards.

  • Ensure fire safety compliance across all sites.

  • Act as the main contact for external bodies during inspections.

  • Lead accident and incident investigations and implement corrective actions.

  • Support emergency preparedness planning.

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • NEBOSH Qualification in Occupational Health & Safety.

  • Experience in developing metrics and driving culture change.

  • Ability to design and conduct group H&S training.

  • Familiarity with occupational H&S management systems.

  • Experience with ISO14001, 18001, and 45001 standards.

  • Strong verbal and numerical skills.

  • Competence with IT systems.

  • Effective influencing and presentation skills.

  • Full UK driving licence.

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Environmental qualification or experience preferred.

  • Industrial experience advantageous.

  • Experience with Dangerous Goods and DSEAR/PUWER.
