Our client, based in South Cambridgeshire, is looking for a Buyer to join their small, family business. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, this is a hands-on role, with responsibility for a portfolio of thousands of part codes. The role includes day-to-day operational responsibilities.
The Buyer will focus on the setup and management of our client’s MRP system, lead on all international and UK purchasing, and oversee another team member. A strong track record in MRP, price negotiation, supplier management, and supply chain optimisation are all essential for this role. This is a full time (37.5hrs per week), permanent position. Candidates will need to have their own transport due to the rural location.
Responsibilities will include:
- Managing and optimising the company’s procurement processes, covering both UK and international suppliers
- Taking full ownership of the setup and running of our client’s MRP system, ensuring it runs efficiently, and accurately reflects business needs
- Supervising and supporting one direct report within the purchasing team
- Securing the best possible pricing, terms, and service levels
- Sourcing new suppliers and materials to support innovation and cost reduction
- Maintaining appropriate stock levels by forecasting demand and monitoring usage
- Evaluating supplier performance and ensuring compliance with contracts and agreements
- Identifying and implementing procurement process improvements and cost-saving initiatives.
To be suitable for this role, candidates will need to have the following skills and experience:
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience managing and operating an MRP system in a manufacturing or distribution setting
- 5+ years' experience in a senior procurement or buying role
- Ability to manage, mentor, and develop staff
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, with strong analytical skills
- Proficient in Excel and procurement/ERP systems (experience with Sage is advantageous)
- CIPS qualification or equivalent is desirable but not essential.
