Animal Licensing Officer - Safeguarding Animal Welfare in Suffolk (6-12 Month Contract, Paid Per Inspection, Outside IR35)
We are excited to be recruiting for an Animal Licensing Officer to join our client’s team in Suffolk on a 6-12 month contract. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in animal welfare across Suffolk, with a paid per inspection structure and the role being outside IR35.
In this dynamic role, you will be responsible for carrying out inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities under animal licensing legislation. You will oversee a wide range of activities, including kennels, catteries, riding schools, and pet shops.

Purpose of the Role
- Deliver regulatory and advisory services to safeguard animal welfare.
- Carry out inspections, investigations, and enforcement on both licensed and unlicensed activities.
- Support Environmental Health Officers with complex cases and complaints.
- Drive continuous improvement within the Animal Licensing function.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect licensed premises to ensure compliance with animal welfare legislation.
- Conduct interim inspections in line with licensing conditions.
- Investigate unlicensed activities and enforce as required.
- Monitor online platforms for illegal activities (e.g., puppy sales) and act accordingly.
- Process and validate animal licence applications.
- Keep public guidance and online content up to date.
- Advise operators, businesses, and the public on animal welfare matters.
- Liaise with veterinary professionals and other enforcement bodies.
- Assist in shaping and reviewing animal licensing policies.
General and Technical Support
- Provide support on complex cases and legal enforcement actions.
- Prepare reports and evidence files; present evidence in legal proceedings if required.
- Deliver excellent customer service, offering advice and signposting.
- Promote public awareness of animal welfare and licensing requirements.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure data quality.
- Keep your skills up to date through training and development.
- Work flexibly, including occasional evenings or weekends, if required.
