We are working with a Utilities company to build out their smart meter data team following some business growth and investment.

This Smart Meter Engineer (Data and Benefit Realisation Focus) will report to the Smart Meter Manager and will work within the Strategy Regulation and Support Services directorate based in their Ipswich office. You will be a permanent employee.

ROLE

You will report to the Smart Metering Manager and work with cross-functional teams (Network Control, Dispatch, IS, Customer Services, Asset Management, DSO, and others) to ensure the smart metering system operates effectively and delivers its intended capabilities.

Your role focuses on managing system availability, maximising smart meter data to minimise customer disruption, and supporting the delivery of projected annual benefits (£26.7m). You'll turn smart meter data into actionable insights, reports, and applications that drive operational value.

You’ll identify and deliver new use cases, particularly those supporting low carbon technologies (LCTs), and work closely with business teams to embed improved processes. Experience in turning user stories into real solutions, from MVP to full implementation, is essential.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understand distribution network system operations, business objectives, and the electricity industry structure, including smart metering.
  • Deputise for the Smart Metering Operations Manager at industry-level forums hosted by Ofgem, DESNZ, ENA, DCC, and SECAS.
  • Produce responses to industry consultations from Ofgem, DESNZ, SECAS, and DCC related to the smart metering programme.
  • Collaborate with Information Security teams for the annual independent audit of the smart metering system, ensuring compliance with Smart Energy Code (SEC) obligations.
  • Monitor the operation of the smart metering system and lead the resolution of issues to restore services efficiently.
  • Work with Control Systems and Automation teams to ensure the smart metering system (e.g., EnergyIP and interfaces) is operational, supporting upgrades and resolving issues.
  • Ensure smart meter data is efficiently utilised across business units to maximise delivery of smart meter benefits for customers and the organisation.
  • Develop performance reports and analytics to track benefits delivered through smart meter system usage.
  • Identify new capabilities and business value opportunities using smart meter data.
  • Optimise smart meter data to support the delivery of DSO capabilities, particularly on the low voltage network.
  • Monitor DCC performance and track planned changes affecting system operations.

Qualifications and Experience required

  • Utilities industry background.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory environment in which utility companies operate.
  • Minimum of HNC or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Membership of a professional body such as the IET or working towards membership
  • Distribution network experience, including both overhead & underground plant, substations and connectivity.
  • An understanding of SCADA systems and how they represent network operational diagrams to show the different available datasets such as from smart metering.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Smart Metering regulatory regime, the national Smart Metering Programme, and its organisation.
  • Knowledge of SMART grid projects including low carbon technologies, network analytics, modelling and data reporting.
  • An understanding of Connections methodology would be benefitable.
  • Able to collaborate with other departments within the organisation and with external organisations.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Demonstratable experience of solution development from ideation to minimum viable product to business as usual.
