Senior/Principal Electrical Design Engineer

Your background as a consulting Electrical Design Engineer is the key to unlocking this opportunity. If you have a proven track record in designing complex building services, particularly for critical environments, then your skills are in high demand. While substantial experience in data centres is the ideal, a strong foundation of ten or more years in sectors like large-scale commercial, science, or healthcare projects is also highly valued. An understanding of critical power systems, including generators and UPS, is essential, and any exposure to Medium Voltage (MV) or High Voltage (HV) systems would be a significant advantage.

Role and Responsibilities

This is a chance to join a specialist data centre design consultancy that has built its 40-year reputation on quality, not quantity. By deliberately maintaining a smaller, expert team, they ensure every project receives the hands-on attention of senior staff, making them a trusted partner for some of the most power-intensive facilities across the UK and Europe.

You will take charge of mission-critical projects from concept to completion. This is a hybrid role, requiring 2-3 days in the office each week. Your day-to-day will involve leading projects, but you'll remain deeply involved in the technical detail - producing design calculations, marking up drawings, writing specifications, and reviewing the work of junior engineers. This is a role for an engineer who wants to lead without leaving the design work behind.

Company culture

You will be part of a close-knit team of around 25-28 professionals where quality control is paramount. The partners and directors are all hands-on engineers who actively participate in project design and delivery. This creates an environment where you have real influence and direct exposure to all aspects of the business.

What you'll need

路A background as a consulting Electrical Design Engineer in the UK
路Significant experience in building services design (approx. 10+ years).
路Experience designing critical systems (e.g., generators, UPS).
路The ability to lead projects while remaining hands-on with technical design.
路Substantial data centre design experience is highly desirable.
路Exposure to Medium Voltage (MV) and/or High Voltage (HV) systems is a plus.
路Willingness for occasional international travel for project-specific needs.

If you are ready to apply your expertise to challenging projects within a team that values quality and technical excellence, this is the role for you. To discuss this opportunity in more detail, please get in touch with Charlie Weeks at Carrington West.

FOOTNOTE: If you feel that you are right for this role technically, but the salary, location or seniority does not suit you specifically then please still feel free to send us your CV.
