Garage Manager - 55,000 to 60,000 per annum
Location: Barking
Hours: 45 hours per week, Monday to Friday (between 5am - 6pm)
Holiday: 25 days per annum + 8 public/bank holidays
Salary: 55,000-60,000 per year
Alecto Recruitment is working with our client in the Recycling industry looking for a HGV General manager at their site in Barking. With over 100 years of history, they are the UK's leading purchaser and recycler of waste glass. Operating across major process plants in South Kirkby, Knottingley, Doncaster, and Tilbury, they handle approximately 1 million tonnes of raw material annually. Their work plays a crucial role in supporting the glass manufacturing industry by recovering and processing waste glass.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a proactive Garage Manager to lead operations at our Barking site. Reporting to the Head of Logistics and the Transport Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day management of the garage, ensuring that all company and customer vehicles are maintained to DVSA standards. This is a key leadership role requiring hands-on operational control, team management, and compliance oversight.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the garage team effectively
- Ensure all vehicles meet legal, roadworthy, and safety requirements
- Develop, maintain, and follow vehicle service schedules and maintenance plans
- Monitor garage activities, including overtime and attendance reporting
- Manage health and safety, including risk assessments and compliance
- Maintain calibrated tools and accurate service records
- Control stock of garage consumables and manage ordering
- Support vehicle onboarding and decommissioning processes
- Maintain compliance in vehicle documentation and licensing
- Investigate and support vehicle incidents and accident reports
- Ensure job records (labour, parts, cost) are logged for all garage tasks
- Enforce adherence to daily vehicle checks and defect reporting systems
- Act as the first point of contact for transport department issues
- Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth operations
- Provide monthly performance reports and be on call for emergency situations
- Participate in training and continuous professional development
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- HGV NVQ Level 3 (City & Guilds)
- Valid Class 1 driving licence
- CPC qualification desirable
- Strong leadership and team management skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Able to remain calm under pressure and problem-solve effectively
- Competent in record-keeping and compliance procedures
