We are seeking a highly experienced Principal HV Plant Design Engineer to lead the delivery of primary engineering design for electrical substation projects up to 400kV. This role involves overseeing a team of design engineers and supporting the Design Managers in the day-to-day coordination of engineering and technical teams.



Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the design team to deliver high-quality engineering solutions in line with customer specifications, National Grid standards, and relevant international regulations.
  • Review and approve HV plant design deliverables including:
    • Single line diagrams
    • Layout and elevation drawings
    • MEWP access layouts
    • Short-circuit force calculations
    • Earthing designs and calculations
  • Act as TP137 / SR188 CDAE and LCDAE for National Grid projects, ensuring design assurance and compliance.
  • Promote and enforce Health & Safety standards in line with CDM regulations, identifying risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure all models and drawings undergo thorough review and approval, including those from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Champion BIM best practices and digital engineering standards across the team.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, driving innovation and continuous improvement in engineering methodology.


Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum 10 years' experience in a design office environment, ideally within HV substation projects.
  • Proven leadership in HV Primary Plant design, including transformers, switchgear, and associated systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power system design and integrity calculations.
  • Experience liaising with clients, suppliers, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with BIM 360 and digital design workflows.
  • TP137/TP141, Candidates will be supported in achieving TP141 HV Plant CDAE authorisation within the company.
  • Basic understanding of Protection & Control (P&C) systems is beneficial.
