I’m hiring on behalf of a pioneering clean-energy technology company, supporting them in securing an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a 3-month paternity cover contract. This role sits within their R&D function and focuses on mechanical design for next-generation electrochemical hardware.
If you're motivated by meaningful engineering challenges and want to contribute to a mission-led organisation aiming to change the future of green energy, this is a great short-term opportunity.
The OpportunityYou’ll work closely with the technical leadership team on key mechanical componentry for their novel electrolyser system. Expect high-impact work, rapid iteration, and the chance to influence designs at an early, innovative stage.
What You’ll Be Doing-
Producing detailed CAD designs and drawings (OnShape preferred; SolidWorks acceptable).
-
Delivering fully-specified drawings, BoMs, and design data for manufacturing and procurement.
-
Identifying design and process improvements across mechanical components and assemblies.
-
Providing technical leadership or support on product development and improvement projects, including working with external suppliers.
-
Applying rapid-iteration principles: fast prototyping, fail-fast learning cycles.
-
Contributing to design and safety reviews (FMEA, HAZOP).
-
Collaborating closely with electrochemical, process, safety, and electrical engineering teams.
-
Managing component suppliers and expediting critical parts when needed.
-
Degree (BEng or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering.
-
4+ years’ experience in mechanical design engineering, including component design for high-volume manufacture.
-
Strong CAD capability and experience producing engineering drawings to BS8888 standards.
-
Experience participating in safety methodologies (e.g., HAZOP, FMEA).
-
Self-starter, able to operate effectively in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
-
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
-
Comfortable managing multiple workstreams simultaneously.
-
Knowledge of hydrogen systems, electrolysers or fuel cells.
-
Familiarity with high-pressure equipment design (ASME VIII div 3, PD5500, EN 13445).
-
Experience with corrosive service materials selection.
-
Background in early-stage product development and moving designs toward commercialisation.
-
Exposure to supercritical water reactor technology.
