Technical Author – Contract – Christchurch, Dorset (Hybrid)

 

We are working on behalf of a key defence engineering client to recruit an experienced Technical Author to support a major military communications programme. This is a 6-month contract role based in Christchurch, Dorset, offered on a hybrid basis (3 days in office / 2 days remote).

  • Location: Christchurch, Dorset (hybrid working)

  • Rate: Competitive hourly rate (via approved umbrella company)

 

 

Role Overview:

 

The successful candidate will join a small, dedicated documentation team responsible for developing, amending, and maintaining technical documentation for a wide-area military communications system. This includes operating manuals, maintenance procedures, and training material.

 

 

Core Responsibilities:

 

  • Gather and assess technical source data from equipment suppliers to inform documentation outputs.

  • Conduct Maintenance Task Analysis (MTA) on electronic and communications systems, including radios and masts.

  • Author and update Data Modules, including operating procedures and technical drawings.

  • Collaborate with the Training Team on content development.

  • Create and maintain Data Module Requirements Lists (DMRL).

  • Populate and manage the Common Source Database (CSDB).

  • Peer review and proofread Data Modules via CSDB workflows.

  • Generate Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETPs) using Trilogi software.

  • Provide support on ILS and LSA documentation tasks as required.

 

 

Required Skills & Experience:

 

  • Strong understanding of S1000D (v4.1) and Def Stan 00-601.

  • Experience authoring to S1000D standards using XML.

  • Familiarity with DMRL, Standard Numbering Systems, and technical publication processes.

  • Experience using EAGLE LSAR / Publishing System, or similar CSDB tools.

  • Knowledge of Trilogi build (desirable).

  • High level of attention to detail and configuration management practices.

  • Ability to interpret and create technical illustrations.
