Title: Lead Planning Engineer (Major Project)
Location: Central Manchester (Hybrid)
Salary: 80-90,000 + package

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Planning Engineer to join the delivery team of a boutique consultancy on a major infrastructure scheme in central Manchester. This is a fantastic opportunity for a planning professional with a strong site-based background in heavy civil engineering to play a key role in the successful delivery of a landmark project.

As the Lead Planner, you will take responsibility for all aspects of project planning and controls, providing technical and strategic support to the project leadership team. You'll be instrumental in ensuring accurate programme management, compliance with NEC contract requirements, and effective communication with both internal and external stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and maintain detailed project programmes using Primavera P6 throughout all stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Liaise closely with site teams to gather progress data and update construction programmes accordingly.
  • Prepare and present progress reports, dashboards, and earned value analysis to the project and client teams.
  • Identify and analyse programme risks, delays, and opportunities, proposing mitigation strategies where required.
  • Support the project team in assessing the impact of change, compensation events, and variations in line with NEC contract provisions.
  • Attend and lead planning meetings with clients, subcontractors, and internal delivery teams.
  • Ensure alignment between construction methodology, resources, and schedule deliverables.
  • Provide planning support during tender, pre-construction, and delivery phases as required.
  • Mentor and guide junior planners, promoting best practice in project controls and planning systems.

Candidate

  • Proven experience as a Planning Engineer or Lead Planner on large-scale heavy civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong site-based experience, ideally gained within a main contracting environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Primavera P6 and a solid understanding of project controls principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of NEC contract forms, particularly regarding time-related clauses and compensation events.
  • Confident communicator with excellent client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
