Commercial Manager for a major Environmental Consultancy
We are looking for a forward-thinking Commercial Manager to lead the commercial function within a growing environmental consultancy delivering complex projects that support sustainable development. This is a key leadership role overseeing contractual, financial and commercial activities while guiding a small team of Quantity Surveyors.
Working closely with technical, environmental and project delivery teams, you'll ensure that projects are commercially robust, contractually compliant, and aligned with the organisation's mission to deliver positive environmental and social outcomes. You will help shape commercial strategy across the business, ensuring strong financial performance, clear forecasting, and well-managed risk.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead commercial management across a range of environmentally focused projects, ensuring compliance with best practice and contractual requirements.
  • Provide strategic commercial advice to senior leaders, project managers and multidisciplinary environmental teams.
  • Oversee preparation, negotiation and administration of contracts and subcontracts (including JCT and NEC).
  • Manage cost control, financial reporting, cashflow visibility, forecasting and commercial governance.
  • Ensure timely and accurate valuations, applications for payment, variations and final accounts.
  • Identify and mitigate risk, supporting resolution of contractual and commercial issues.
  • Support tender reviews, bids and proposals with accurate commercial insight.
  • Mentor and develop Quantity Surveyors, promoting a collaborative and sustainability-driven culture.
  • Oversee procurement processes and ensure transparent, ethical tendering.
What We're Looking For
  • Proven background in commercial management within construction, infrastructure, environmental consultancy or related sectors.
  • Strong understanding of NEC/JCT contracts and their application in sustainable development projects.
  • Financially sharp, with excellent analytical, forecasting and reporting skills.
  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement, negotiation and influencing across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Able to manage competing priorities across multiple live projects.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to positively guide and develop commercial staff.
  • Committed to supporting projects with strong environmental and social value outcomes.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years' relevant commercial management experience.
  • Experience managing commercial teams and project finances.
  • Knowledge of UK construction contracts, commercial processes and relevant regulations.
Reporting Structure
  • Reports to: Operations Director
  • Direct Reports: Small team of Quantity Surveyors
