An experienced Housing Options Officer is required to join a busy Housing Solutions team within a local authority. This is a front-line role that plays a key part in preventing homelessness and providing tailored housing advice and assistance to those in need.

The successful candidate will bring a strong working knowledge of homelessness legislation and a prevention-first mindset, capable of managing complex caseloads and supporting vulnerable individuals, including those with a history of rough sleeping.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality housing advice in line with Part VI and Part VII of the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.

  • Undertake thorough homelessness assessments and create robust Personalised Housing Plans (PHPs) to support prevention and relief duties.

  • Provide a prevention-focused service, identifying practical solutions to avoid homelessness wherever possible.

  • Manage a complex and varied caseload, including clients with multiple support needs, safeguarding concerns, or a history of rough sleeping.

  • Work closely with internal departments, support services, landlords, and external partners to secure sustainable housing outcomes.

  • Ensure all casework is fully documented, compliant with statutory guidance, and meets performance targets.

  • Support legal processes where necessary, including preparing cases for review or court, and issuing appropriate decisions under relevant legislation.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • In-depth understanding and proven application of the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017.

  • Experience working within a statutory housing options or homelessness prevention service.

  • Strong working knowledge of housing law, case law, and local authority duties.

  • Ability to assess and manage complex homelessness cases with professionalism and empathy.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including drafting legally sound decisions and correspondence.

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to meet deadlines under pressure.

  • Confident in liaising with external agencies and building effective working relationships.
