Job Title: Paralegal

Location: Reading - Hybrid working

Job Purpose: Delivering high-quality legal services and ensuring best value for the Council and its partners.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the legal team in advising Members, Officers, and Partners on legal matters, policies, and corporate issues.
  • Assist in the timely delivery of effective legal services with maximum efficiency and economy.
  • Utilize technology to enhance team efficiency and implement continual improvements in systems and processes.
  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives and support change projects.
  • Mentor and supervise young people on work experience.

Legal Services Requirements:

  • Provide advice to officers within your knowledge and experience, seeking qualified lawyers' input when needed.
  • Conduct day-to-day legal work allocated by your line manager.
  • Manage a caseload of matters and proactively report progress to customers.
  • Undertake advocacy in Courts or Tribunals appropriate to your qualifications and experience.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental and corporate policies using information systems.
  • Record time and income in accordance with departmental policies.

Service Development:

  • Support the development of the team in line with corporate values and identify innovative ways to improve service provision.
  • Assist in delivering training and development activities for services and external partners.
  • Support new business activities as required.

Policy Requirements:

  • Promote equality of outcomes in service delivery, ensuring fair treatment for all community members, especially those with special needs or who are disadvantaged.
  • Ensure actions comply with departmental and Council policies, Standing Orders, Financial Regulations, and the Code of Conduct for Council Officers.

Qualifications/Education/Training

  1. General education.  Good general education with at least 5 GSCEs at Grade 4-9 (or equivalent) including Maths and English.

Experience

  1. Prior experience of local government or another legal services setting
  2. Willingness to engage in improvement initiatives for the legal dept.
