Head of Manufacturing

Location: South Yorkshire

Salary: £40,000 - £45,000

Role Overview

We are seeking a proven leader to take full responsibility for manufacturing operations and drive a culture of continuous improvement. This role is accountable for safety, quality, cost, delivery, inventory, and people management, ensuring operational excellence across the facility. The successful candidate will also lead transformation projects, embedding lean practices and fostering a proactive, problem-solving culture.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Lead and manage a production team, including direct line management of supervisors.
  • Deliver all orders on time, in full, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Set clear priorities, create accountability, and monitor team performance.
  • Develop, implement, and manage the weekly production schedule.
  • Ensure compliance with all health & safety and quality requirements.

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive a continuous improvement culture, ensuring proactive solutions and efficiency gains.
  • Lead and deliver structured improvement projects across operations.
  • Apply lean/CI tools and methodologies (e.g. DMAIC, 5S, 5 Whys, SQCDIP) to improve performance.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement long-term corrective actions.
  • Manage improvement boards, assigning ownership to project leads and tracking progress.

About You

Essential

  • Professionally qualified engineer (minimum degree or equivalent).
  • Proven leadership experience within a manufacturing/production environment.
  • Strong record of managing and delivering improvement projects.
  • Skilled in problem-solving, analysis, and stakeholder management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experienced with lean and continuous improvement methodologies.

Desirable

  • Experience in custom, project-based, or made-to-order manufacturing.
  • Previous exposure to customer-facing environments where operational performance directly impacted satisfaction.
  • Experience leading change programmes across an entire site.
  • Continuous improvement qualifications (e.g. Six Sigma Green/Black Belt).
  • Project management qualifications (e.g. PRINCE2, PMP).
