This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of Hertfordshire’s residents by joining the Waste Management Unit at Hertfordshire County Council. As the Waste Disposal Authority, we manage waste contracts and operate a network of Recycling Centres across the county. We are now recruiting a Technical Assistant to support the development of our Recycling Centre service into a nationally recognised example of excellence.

About the Role

Reporting to the Technical Manager, you will work closely with colleagues across all levels to deliver a complex statutory service. This varied role includes managing enquiries, complaints, and compliments via our central ‘WasteAware’ inbox, raising works orders, processing invoices, and overseeing stock and distribution of PPE and other consumables. You’ll also travel to Recycling Centres across the county, so access to a car with business use insurance is essential.

You’ll assist with technical advice on mobile phone use, software administration (including the Van Permit Scheme), weighbridge operations, and secure sharing of CCTV/BWVC footage for investigations. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to build a career in Waste Management within a supportive and knowledgeable team.

About You

You’ll have strong organisational and time management skills, be confident using Microsoft Office, and able to quickly learn new systems and processes. Excellent communication skills are essential, as you’ll often be the first point of contact for service users. A positive, solution-focused attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are key. Experience in data handling, stakeholder engagement, or health and safety compliance would be an advantage.

The team is based at the Ware Recycling Centre, and occasional travel to other locations will be required.
