Thorn Baker is working with a well-established civil engineering and groundworks contractor in Somerset, seeking an ambitious and detail-oriented Junior Quantity Surveyor or an Assistant QS ready to take the next step in their career.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills by supporting a Senior Quantity Surveyor across a range of residential projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to high quality and safety standards.

 

 

Key Responsibilities of the Junior Quantity Surveyor:

 

  • Cost Estimation & Budgeting: Assist in preparing accurate cost estimates and tracking ongoing project costs.
  • Contract Administration: Help manage contracts, variations, claims, and payment certificates.
  • Tendering & Procurement: Support the preparation of tender documents, bid reviews, and procurement decisions.
  • Cost Control: Monitor budgets, track project spend, and assist in cost reporting and forecasting.
  • Measurement & Valuation: Contribute to the valuation of completed works and help prepare payment applications.
  • Site Visits: Visit sites to assess progress, support risk management, and review performance.
  • Reporting: Assist with regular reports including cost updates, risk analysis, and project performance.
  • Collaboration: Liaise with site teams, contractors, and clients to resolve issues and ensure smooth financial management.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Keep accurate records in line with company procedures and legal requirements.
  • Risk Management: Help identify and mitigate project risks around cost and timeframes.

 

 

What We're Looking For:

 

  • Degree (or working towards) in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 1-2 years' experience as an Assistant or Junior QS in the construction industry.
  • Experience with civil engineering or groundworks is preferred, but not essential.
  • Familiarity with JCT and/or NEC contracts.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and general cost management tools.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
