Rural Specialist
Location: Taunton, Somerset

Penguin Recruitment is delighted to be representing a forward-thinking rural planning and development consultancy in their search for a Rural Specialist to join their team in Taunton.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a planning or rural property professional with strong private sector experience and a passion for the countryside. You'll play a key role in advising clients across a diverse range of rural matters from estate management and farm diversification to renewable energy, tourism, and equestrian development.

The Role
As a Rural Specialist, you'll be responsible for managing and delivering planning and development projects for rural clients. You'll provide advice across a wide range of areas, including agricultural development, diversification, barn conversions, heritage assets, and enforcement matters.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing planning applications, appraisals, and feasibility studies for rural sites.

  • Advising on planning law and permitted development rights (especially Schedule 2 - Parts 3, 5 & 6).

  • Preparing planning submissions, statements, and appeals.

  • Providing on site advice to landowners, estate managers, and rural businesses.

  • Managing client relationships and representing the firm at planning committees and public meetings.

  • Supporting business development and team leadership activities.

About You

  • Demonstrable experience in rural planning, estate management, or development.

  • Strong understanding of planning law, particularly in rural and designated areas.

  • Excellent communication, report writing, and client engagement skills.

  • Commercially aware with the ability to manage your own workload and projects.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; CAD or SketchUp experience desirable.

  • MRTPI or RICS membership preferred (or working towards).

  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the South West.
