Principal Safety Engineer
Location: Weymouth, Frimley, Portsmouth or Bristol (Hybrid & Flexible Working Available)
Salary: Negotiable depending on experience

UK Nationality / Citizenship required to be eligible for this position due to the national security level criteria.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a team working on the design and safety of advanced submarine combat systems - encompassing navigation, command and control, communication, and other essential operational capabilities.

What You'll Be Doing


  • Conducting Programmable Elements Safety Engineering activities such as PHA, FTA, and PSSA/SSA to support Combat System safety justifications.

  • Determining causes of systematic Programmable Elements safety failures and carrying out common cause analysis.

  • Defining and monitoring Programmable Elements Safety Requirements and ensuring compliance with relevant standards.

  • Leading and contributing to hazard identification workshops and safety committee meetings.

  • Overseeing the integration and acceptance of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products.

  • Liaising with equipment and system suppliers to review and gather safety evidence in accordance with Def Stan 00-055.

  • Reporting progress of safety engineering activities at project and programme reviews.

  • Contributing to an established Safety Management System and recommending improvements.


What We're Looking For


Essential:


  • Proven experience in Programmable Elements Safety Engineering, including producing FTA and SIL allocation documents to develop PSSA and SSA.

  • Strong understanding of safety for systems with Programmable Elements in accordance with Def Stan 00-055 and Def Stan 00-056.

  • Experience with safety engineering and safety requirements in line with IEC/BS EN 61508 within the defence domain.

  • Competence in applying software development SIL/DAL rigour based on industry standards.


Desirable:


  • Relevant engineering qualification (BEng/MEng or equivalent experience).

  • Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status (or working towards).

About the Role:
You'll play a critical role in delivering safety assurance for advanced defence systems, working across multiple domains of submarine combat capability. This is a chance to influence the design, safety, and performance of systems that operate in some of the most challenging environments on earth.
Due to the nature of the work, security clearance will be required. Applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), with some roles requiring higher levels of UK National Security Vetting (typically 5-10 years of continuous UK residency).
