Company Overview

We are a growing SME group headquartered in Wolverhampton, currently operating with a turnover of £3.5 million to £6 million and targeting £10 million within the next two years. With a team of around 50 employees, we have recently relocated to brand-new, modern offices and are looking for an experienced and dependable Bookkeeper / Assistant Accountant to join our friendly, professional, and performance-driven team.

Role Overview

This is a hands-on role for a capable and trustworthy finance professional who will be responsible for the entire finance function across three companies within the group. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will oversee day-to-day financial operations, maintain accurate ledgers, produce trial balances, manage payroll, and provide timely reporting and financial insights to support strategic business decisions.

You will also manage intercompany transactions, perform monthly reconciliations, and ensure smooth and compliant financial operations across the group.

This role is ideal for someone with 5-10 years' experience, looking for long-term career stability in a supportive yet driven environment, working closely with a director who is firm but fair and values strong work ethic, accuracy, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities?? General Accounting & Bookkeeping
  • Maintain full financial records for three group companies

  • Raise and process sales and purchase invoices

  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, including credit control and payment runs

  • Process staff expenses and petty cash

  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and supplier statements

  • Post monthly journals (accruals, prepayments, depreciation)

  • Maintain sales, purchase, and nominal ledgers

  • Prepare monthly trial balances

?? Payroll
  • Manage end-to-end payroll for approx. 50 employees

  • Process PAYE, NI, pensions, and statutory payments

  • Submit RTI returns to HMRC

  • Issue payslips and resolve payroll queries

  • Track holiday and sickness leave

?? VAT & Compliance
  • Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns (MTD compliant)

  • Reconcile VAT, PAYE, and other control accounts

  • Liaise with HMRC and external accountants where necessary

  • Assist with year-end processes and audits

?? Intercompany & Group Finance
  • Accurately record and reconcile intercompany transactions

  • Prepare internal cross-charges and allocations

  • Perform monthly reconciliations of intercompany balances

  • Monitor and report on cash flow across group companies

  • Support in the preparation of consolidated group reports

?? Reporting & Analysis
  • Deliver timely, accurate financial reports to the Managing Director

  • Support with in-depth analysis of company performance

  • Provide proactive financial insights and decision-support

  • Use Excel for data reporting (PivotTables, VLOOKUPs, formulas)

?? Systems & Tools
  • Use and maintain records in QuickBooks and Sage (Line 50 or Business Cloud)

  • Advanced use of Microsoft Excel for financial modelling and analysis

  • Ensure all data is confidential, well-organised, and compliant

Candidate Requirements? Essential
  • 5-10 years of accounting/bookkeeping experience in an SME environment

  • Experience managing accounts for multiple entities or group structures

  • Proficient in QuickBooks, Sage, and advanced Excel (PivotTables, VLOOKUPs)

  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy

  • Ability to work independently and manage end-to-end accounts

  • High level of trustworthiness and confidentiality

  • Stable career history (3-5 years in previous roles or redundancy-explained moves)

  • Confident working with senior stakeholders (particularly the Managing Director)

  • Positive attitude and ability to integrate into a bubbly, supportive team culture

? Desirable
  • AAT qualified or part-qualified ACCA/CIMA

  • Experience preparing for and supporting external audits

  • Familiarity with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements

  • Understanding of consolidated group accounts
