Wastewater Collection System Operator (All Levels)

City of Carmel, Indiana – Utilities Department

The city of Carmel is hiring Wastewater Collections System Operators of all levels to help maintain one of Indiana's premier wastewater collection systems. Whether you're beginning your utilities career or bringing years of experience, you'll work with state-of-the-art equipment, receive ongoing training, and enjoy a stable public-sector career with excellent benefits and opportunities for advancement.

 

What You’ll Do:


  • Inspect, maintain, and repair wastewater collection infrastructure
  • Operate specialized equipment including combination jet/vac trucks, hydro-excavators, CCTV inspection equipment, skid steers, mini excavators, and other heavy equipment
  • Repair sewer mains, manholes, lift stations, and related infrastructure
  • Complete preventive maintenance and emergency repairs
  • Perform inspections and document work using asset management software
  • Follow confined space, trench safety, lockout/tagout, and traffic control procedures
  • Participate in a 24-hour on-call rotation to respond to emergency utility situations

Senior Operators also:

  • Lead crews and coordinate daily work activities
  • Train and mentor team members
  • Diagnose complex collection system issues
  • Assist with planning and regulatory compliance

Work Environment

  • Working outdoors year-round in varying weather conditions
  • Operating heavy equipment, commercial vehicles, and specialized sewer maintenance equipment
  • Entering confined spaces and excavations in accordance with safety regulations
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment and materials up to 100 pounds
  • Exposure to traffic, construction zones, machinery, wastewater, chemicals, uneven terrain, noise, and other environmental hazards
  • Participation in a 24-hour on-call rotation to respond to emergency sewer system repairs and service interruptions


Qualifications (Level Based on Experience & Licensing) 

Apprentice:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Approximately 1 year of related mechanical, construction, utilities, wastewater, or water distribution experience
  • Wastewater Collection Class I certification
  • Valid Indiana CDL

Intermediate:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2-3 years of wastewater collections, water distribution, or related utilities experience
  • Wastewater Collection Class II certification
  • Valid Indiana CDL

Senior:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 6+ years of wastewater collections experience
  • Class III Collections, DSL, Wastewater Operator, or WT5 certification
  • Valid Indiana CDL
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
