The Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant (LPTA) works under the supervision and direction of a Licensed Physical Therapist to deliver high‑quality rehabilitative care in alignment with established treatment plans. The LPTA provides therapeutic interventions to support patients in improving mobility, restoring function, and managing pain as part of their individualized rehabilitation program. Responsibilities include carrying out prescribed treatments, monitoring and documenting patient progress, and promptly communicating changes in patient condition to the supervising Physical Therapist. The LPTA also assists in educating patients, families, and caregivers, while ensuring a safe, supportive, and patient‑centered care environment. This role may provide guidance to Rehab Technicians and other support staff as needed. All duties are performed in accordance with departmental policies, professional standards, and the mission, vision, and values of Tampa General Hospital.

Essential Functions

  • Review and verify the Physical Therapist’s plan of care documented in the patient chart prior to initiating treatment

  • Ensure documentation reflects patient function, progress, or lack thereof, to support the need for continued skilled intervention

  • Identify and document the needs of the patient, family, and significant others throughout the rehabilitation process

  • Clearly explain the role of Physical Therapy to patients and their families

  • Demonstrate knowledge of specific conditions, diseases, and effective treatment techniques relevant to the patient population served

  • Participate in patient and family education, utilizing written materials when appropriate to promote optimal outcomes

  • Assess patient responses to the plan of care, collaborate with the Physical Therapist to review progress, and implement necessary changes

  • Adhere to all applicable federal, state, and statutory regulations governing the ethical and professional delivery of Physical Therapy services



Education

  • Associate's Degree Physical Therapy Assistant program

License/Registration - Issued by Florida or Compact State

  • Physical Therapist Assistant

  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the state of Florida.

Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA)

Work Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited Associate program for Physical Therapy Assistants

  • One (1) year Hospital Clinical experience
