Department Description
The Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS) is committed to providing students with disabilities equal access to their college education and university life when environmental and academic barriers are identified. OARS engages with faculty and staff to provide and coordinate appropriate and reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities. They will also support students with disabilities in their pursuit of self-advocacy, independence, and equal access.
Job Description
Assist OARS personnel with the day-to-day operating tasks of the OARS Testing Center, provide in class note-taking and/or scribe services for students approved for Scribe accommodations, and other OARS operating procedures such as creating alternative text materials or closed captioning services.
Job Location/ Hours Required
The candidate will perform all their job duties in specific classes with the student who needs a scribe, in the OARS Testing Center, or both depending on office needs. The scheduled hours will be between 8:00am and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday and possible evening hours 5:00-7:00 Tuesday through Thursday, but may vary depending on the job requirements and student course schedule. The total number of hours a student employee may work per week is 20 hours. This position requires up to 6 – 10 hrs.
Responsibilities of Each Location:
OARS Testing Center/OARS office
- Assist the Testing Coordinator with check-in, check-out, and proctoring responsibilities for students taking an exam in the OARS Testing Center.
- In cooperation with the Testing Coordinator, prepare and organize testing materials.
- Scan and upload completed exams into the Accommodation/Test Room Booking platform.
- Greet and address the needs of walk-in traffic.
- Uphold all HPU and OARS professional policies.
- Communicate regularly with the OARS Student Worker Supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.
In Classroom
- Take notes in class based on the preferences of the student with disabilities.
- Read printed material aloud for students with visual impairments.
- Transcribe for students with fine motor impairments.
- Assist students with visual impairments in science labs by providing verbal descriptions of visual information.
- Serve as a scribe for students with disabilities during tests (if applicable).
- Reformat electronic and printed materials for accessibility.
- Uphold all HPU and OARS professional policies.
- Communicate regularly with the OARS Student Worker Supervisor.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Possess customer service experience
- Possess basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
- Must have a minimum GPA 3.0
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be trainable and self-motivated
- Ability to take thorough and organized notes utilizing available technology from the information presented verbally in classrooms.
- Must have legible handwriting or the ability to use a computer for note-taking purposes
- Must practice accurate spelling and grammar
- Must possess good organizational skills and multitasking skills
- Must possess a positive work ethic
- Must maintain confidentiality at all levels of employment with OARS
