General Summary

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Be a High School graduate or have certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development Test (GED).

1. a. Have had at least one (1) year of full-time work experience as an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputy; OR

b. Possess current MCOLES license OR be currently attending a Police Academy training or its equivalent (as required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES); OR

NOTE: Must have successfully completed the police academy and be eligible to be licensed prior to the date of hire.

Have at least two (2) years of full-time work experience as a Federal Law Enforcement Agent; OR

c. Be an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy, Marine Deputy or Mounted Deputy and have completed 1,000 hours of service; OR

d. Successful completion of a Reserve Police Academy and completion of 1,000 hours of service; OR

e. Have two (2) years of full-time work experience as a Corrections Officer.

2. Possess a valid  motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. 

3. Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law including domestic violence.  (Criminal law generally includes all offenses except traffic law, conservation law and liquor law.  Generally, conviction for a violation of criminal law is automatically disqualifying).

4. Have at least 20/20 corrected vision with both eyes and have normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes.

5. Have normal corrected hearing in each ear, per Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license.

Must maintain firearms qualification and deputy status.

A  background investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, credit criminal, military or other personal records.  Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non-moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office before an applicant can be appointed.  Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision.  Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statute will be a disqualifying factor.

WHEN ASSIGNED TO COURTS OR OTHER SATELLITE LOCATIONS

Deputies will operate stationary x-ray machine and hand-held metal detectors located in the courthouse lobbies to screen visitors for weapons and unauthorized objects. Deputies will direct the flow of traffic through the inspection area.

Performs visual inspections of briefcases, purses, packages, etc., and examines these items using hand held metal detectors as necessary.

Checks identification for individuals authorized to carry weapons.  Secures firearms in weapon storage areas (lock boxes) or directs individuals to secure weapons and oversees this process.

On occasion may have to search individuals for concealed weapons and/or contraband.

Responds to disturbances and maintains order by warning individuals and apprehending disorderly persons. Restrains individuals and assists in making arrests.

Responds to emergency situations in cases of illness, injury, or the court rooms to prevent individuals from exiting the building or causing a disturbance. 

Utilizes a two-way radio to place and receive calls and request back up support as necessary.

May provide emergency first aid and/or CPR services until medical assistance arrives.

WHEN ASSIGNED TO DISTRICT COURTS

Provides security in probation departments, front lobby/cashier areas and outside perimeter of courthouse buildings including parking lots.

Patrols probation departments, front lobby/cashier areas and outside perimeter of courthouse buildings including parking lots.

WHEN ASSIGNED TO THE RESULTS PROGRAM

Provides security in the Results building(s) lobby and testing areas keeping the noise level low.

Required to check the office and building(s) area each morning to ensure that nothing has been tampered with during the night.

Responds to all emergency incidents reported and provide medical assistance as needed.

Required to perform a (Direct Observation) drug urinalysis test and utilize a handheld PBT in accordance with the program directives.

Records each client’s information on his/her log as well as in the daily logbook.

Utilizes a computer to type reports and will maintain direct contact with the program Sergeant to inform them of incidents.

Required to escort the Office Assistants into the buildings in the morning and out of the building at night.

May be required to make an arrest of program participants who are in violation of the “Work Release Tether Program” and “Zero Tolerance”.

WHEN ASSIGNED A SUBSTATION OR BUILDING SECURITY (Example: Pontiac Substation)

Monitors stationary metal detector located in the substation lobby to screen visitors for weapons and unauthorized objects.

Answers questions and provides direction and basic information to citizens over the phone and in person.

Responds to disturbances and maintains order by warning individuals and apprehending disorderly persons. Restrains individuals and assists in making arrests when needed.

Responds to emergency situations in cases of illness or injury in the substation.Utilizes a two-way radio to request additional resources from dispatch.

Administers Preliminary Breath Tests, collects cash and issues receipts for subjects needing court ordered testing.

Monitors all cameras as well as subjects who are being temporarily detained in the substation holding cells.

Advises the shift Sergeant or, in his absence, the Lieutenant regarding any matters that may affect the operations of the Pontiac substation.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES

Answers questions and provides directions and basic information to the public regarding judicial and other County offices located in the courthouse.

Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to guard an area for a full eight hour day, operate a motor vehicle, speak and give commands, perform inspections and deliver items.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is generally performed inside a building or may be in a motor vehicle.  May need to go outside to deliver items or search areas.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The primary purpose of this job description is to set a fair and equitable salary range for this job classification. Reasonable knowledge of first-aid methods.

Some experience performing security work that requires the exercise of independent judgment based on reasonable knowledge of security practices and procedures.

Night vision certification.

Instrument rated in rotocraft or fixed wing aircraft.

Possess current Flight Instructor Certification in rotocraft or fixed wing aircraft.

Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.
