The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Opto-Mechanical technicians are responsible for the operation, maintenance, upgrades to the amplifiers as well as the support systems including water/glycol cooling systems, nitrogen delivery systems, and the flashlamp test facility. Operators are expected to understand these systems well and have mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot and repair

The University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) is looking for its next Beamlines Technician. Here at LLE, we take pride in being a

national resource for research and education in both science and technology! Our focus is on using lasers to create fusion energy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supporting the operation of equipment and instrumentation for laser physics experiments which frequently involves being in a cleanroom environment
  • Precision alignment of optical systems
  • Troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues 
  • Perform preventative maintenance 
  • Supporting engineers in design and installation of new equipment 


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate’s degree in Optics or technology /engineering field and 2 years of relevant experience required  (4 years’ preferred)
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Strong technical aptitude 
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs and navigate stairs/ladders
  • High degree of manual dexterity 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication 
  • Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software
  • Shift flexibility (Morning and Evening shifts) 

 Preferred:

  • Experience with optical, mechanical, electrical systems 
  • Experience handling precision optical components 
  • Proficient with reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical schematics 
  • Technical writing experience
