Our client is looking for a research economist to join their team based in Birmingham for 6months. The role involves contributing to a project aimed at endorsing an accounting standard in the UK. As part of the endorsement of accounting standards, the UKEB needs to conduct an assessment of costs and benefits to business, as well as an assessment of wider economic effects. The project is the endorsement of IFRS 18 Presentation and Disclosure in Financial Statements, a standard aimed at enhancing the structure of the income statement and providing investors with additional disclosures relating to performance measures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting with the distribution of the two surveys.
  • Assisting with relevant engagement with stakeholders (1-2-1 interviews, other engagement) to bolster the quantitative survey results.
  • Supporting the economics team leader in the analysis of the survey data and in the estimation of market-wide costs for preparers, including through the estimation of econometric models.
  • Possibly assisting the economics team with some other tasks, including potentially:
  • The creation of a cost of capital model to be used as input to the endorsement criteria assessment of IFRS 18.
  • Work aimed at estimating costs of non-adoption/carve-outs.
  • Estimation of direct benefits for users (based on survey results and additional engagement).
  • Estimation of baseline costs for preparers (based on survey results and additional engagement).

Requirements

  • Candidate required to have a master's degree in economics or finance. Applicants with a relevant professional qualification in accounting will also be considered, provided they show evidence of financial market knowledge.
  • Research experience in industry (consulting, government, NGOs) or academia
  • Experience conducting surveys and administering questionnaires
  • Experience conducting qualitative interviews would be considered an advantage
  • Knowledge and understanding of capital markets. Knowledge of UK capital markets would be considered an advantage
  • Good written and oral communication skills. Report writing skills would be considered an advantage
  • Ability to work as part of a team and deliver to tight deadlines.
