Interim Health & Safety Manager
Location: West Midlands (hybrid working)
Contract: 6 months
Rate: 50-55 per hour (Negotiable)
Spencer Clarke Group are supporting our local authority client to appoint an experienced Interim Health & Safety Manager to provide leadership and oversight of health and safety across the organisation. This is a pivotal role, ensuring the council meets its statutory obligations while embedding a positive safety culture that protects employees, contractors, and the public.
The Role
- Lead and manage the Health & Safety Support Team, providing expert advice and guidance to directorates.
- Deliver an effective corporate Health & Safety Management System, ensuring compliance with all current legislation and best practice.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures, and risk management processes to support safe, healthy, and compliant workplaces.
- Act as lead advisor to senior managers on complex safety issues, including serious incidents and compliance risks.
- Support directorates and schools with accident investigation, audits, and improvement action plans.
- Engage with Trade Unions, external statutory bodies, and stakeholders to maintain high standards and effective communication.
About You
- NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and Chartered IOSH (CMIOSH) status.
- Significant experience managing a health & safety function in a large, complex organisation, ideally public sector.
- Proven ability to influence and negotiate at senior management level.
- Strong understanding of current and emerging health & safety legislation.
- Experience of working in a unionised environment and engaging with trade unions.
- Demonstrable experience of delivering cultural change and embedding health & safety improvements at scale.
