My client is a Top 40 firm of Chartered Accountants. As a leading firm of Chartered Accountants, they look after the accountancy, tax planning and business advisory needs of their clients (individuals, businesses and third sector organisations both in the UK and overseas).

They are seeking a Senior/Semi-Senior Accountant to join their team in Brighton & Hove. This position is ideal for someone who is both technically strong and passionate about client service. You will deliver accounting services, ensuring compliance and high-quality outputs.

Key responsibilities include:

• Financial reporting and compliance: Prepare and review financial statements, annual accounts, tax returns, bookkeeping, VAT, and periodic management reports for your clients. Ensure accuracy in all deliverables and compliance with relevant accounting standards and UK tax regulations. You will also make sure all reporting deadlines are met.

• Client relationship management: Serve as a trusted adviser for clients, handling day-to-day queries and proactively addressing their accounting and business needs. You will assist clients with their accounting software, including Xero, Sage, and QuickBooks, ensuring client satisfaction is kept at the forefront.

• Team training and mentoring: Supervise and mentor junior accountants and trainees. You will review their work, provide guidance and training, and foster their professional development.

• Quality control and compliance: Take responsibility for the quality of work produced, implementing review processes to ensure compliance with UK GAAP/IFRS and the latest tax legislation. You will stay up to date with any changes in accounting standards or tax law and ensure the firm’s services adapt accordingly.

• Continuous improvement: Work with your team to identify opportunities to improve internal processes or enhance the client service experience.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a qualified or part-qualified accountant with strong technical knowledge and people skills. Key qualifications and attributes they are looking for include:

• AAT/ACA/ACCA qualified or part-qualified: This is an essential requirement, ensuring you have a solid technical foundation in accounting standards.

• Practice experience: You have previous experience in accounts preparation work, including knowledge of accounting principles and practices. You have experience in basic tax return preparation, bookkeeping, and VAT.

• Technical skills: Strong knowledge of UK accounting standards (UK GAAP and/or IFRS) and a good understanding of tax compliance. You stay current with regulatory changes and can ensure compliance in all client work.

• Accounting software: You have experience of using accounting software including Xero, Sage, and/or QuickBooks.

• IT skills: Intermediate knowledge of Excel spreadsheet development is key to this role. Experience of using IRIS is a plus.

• Client-focused communication: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. You are confident in liaising with clients and explaining complex financial information in clear terms.

• Analytical and organised: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with keen attention to detail. You are well organised, able to manage deadlines and priorities, and you take a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
