Your role is crucial in ensuring the waste-to-energy site adheres to its Environmental Management System (EMS) while actively engaging in health and safety practices. As an Environmental Manager, you will play a pivotal role in managing the environmental processes to ensure compliance with regulations and optimise the efficiency of site activities.

Your responsibilities include.

  • Maintaining a robust EMS through audits and enforcement,
  • Contributing to the site's operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and safety standards

This role will require travel to visit sites throughout the UK.
  • Environmental compliance and EMS auditing
  • Conduct regular audits of the Environmental Management System (EMS) records to verify compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards.
  • Identify areas for improvement and opportunities to enhance EMS effectiveness through audit findings.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to develop corrective and preventive actions based on audit results.
  • Ensure audit reports are accurately documented and communicated to relevant parties for corrective action implementation.
  • Collaborate with consultants to understand the requirements and timelines for completing permit improvement conditions.
  • Health & safety oversight
  • Work closely with the operational and maintenance contractor to enforce health and safety protocols aligned with the sites.
  • Review and provide input on contractor's health and safety procedures to ensure consistency with regulation requirements.
  • Conduct regular inspections and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Contractor Communication and Coordination:


Role Profile


  • Serve as the primary point of contact for communication with the operational and maintenance contractor regarding environmental, health, and safety matters.
  • Collaborate with contractors to ensure their activities align with EMS requirements and contribute to environmental and safety goals.
  • Address any non-compliance issues or deviations from EMS procedures through effective communication and corrective actions.
  • Schedule and monitor the required stack emission testing across the sites.
  • Liaison with environmental consultants
  • Coordinate with environmental consultants to review regulatory changes, industry standards, or organisational requirements.
  • Provide relevant data and information to consultants for environmental reporting requirements.
  • Participate in meetings and discussions to address environmental issues, lead CAR actions, implement recommendations, and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Reporting and documentation
  • Maintain accurate records of EMS audits, including findings, corrective actions, and follow-up activities.
  • Prepare and submit reports on environmental audit results and compliance status to management.
  • Collaborate with the company’s environmental consultants to prepare regulatory environmental reporting.
  • Monitor and analyse audit data to identify trends, assess EMS effectiveness, and drive continuous improvement efforts.
  • Operate and monitor assessment preparation and documentation.
  • Collate relevant information together from EMS records, audit findings, compliance reports, and other sources for operating monitor assessments.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation and data are organised and accessible for assessment purposes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to address any identified gaps or deficiencies prior to assessments.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, occupational health & safety, or related field.
  • Proven experience in environmental compliance management, EMS auditing, and health & safety oversight.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations, EMS standards (e.g., ISO 14001), And health & safety protocols.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
  • Analytical mindset, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Good understanding and experience in preparing for Operator Maintenance Audits (OMA).
  • Oversight of site-based waste managers and operatives Maintain site risk registers, with a particular focus on Insurance and compliance.
