Job Summary:

  • A Technical Author is responsible for seeing projects through from their inception to their successful completion.

  • They are responsible for ensuring that customer requirements are correctly interpreted, that projects are managed effectively on a day-to-day basis and that they are completed on time, within budget and to the customer's satisfaction.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting the Business Development Team in the initial assessment of customer requirements and preparation of proposal documents.

  • To be aware of developments within the company and seek to identify future opportunities from "your customer".

  • Breaking a project down into appropriate work packages * Liaison with the Quality Manager to producing a project-specific quality plan, if required as a condition of the contract with the customer.

  • Liaise with Office Manager/Security Controller in adhering to all security procedures * Configuration management of project source material, ensuring that only the correct version of such material is used in the production process.

  • Producing a production plan and liaising with the Office Manager/Projects Administrations Manager to ensure the allocation of resources that will enable the project to be completed within the requisite budget and timescales.

  • Ensuring that all work under their control is completed in accordance with the applicable Quality Management System procedures and that all the necessary quality assurance checks have been carried out.

  • Discussing any changes in requirement with the customer and negotiating any contract amendments if necessary.

  • Carrying out production tasks on projects in which the project management function is not a full time activity.

  • Maintaining contact with the customer throughout the life of the project to ensure that their expectations are being met (within the bounds of the contract) and to resolve any problems in such a way that our good working relationship with them is not jeopardised.

  • Continue to liaise with clients after project completion to seek work and intelligence on future activities and liaise with Business Development Managers on future opportunities.

  • Ensuring that project records are maintained in accordance with the requirements of the Quality Management System.

  • Ensuring that when the project is completed, the customer receives the deliverable items specified in the project contract and that the project is closed down correctly.

  • Production of project status reports for the Directors/Office Manager

  • Producing appraisals and attending Individual Performance Reviews as directed by Directors/Human Resource Manager/Office Manager.

  • To travel and work at customer's sites as required (this may include overseas travel).

  • To ensure that working hours and expenses are correctly maintained and accurately booked against each project.

Skills:

  • Excellent people management skills.

  • The ability to work to deadlines and to prioritise work, as necessary, to meet project targets.

  • An excellent command of English and the ability to present information in a clear and understandable way.

  • Familiarity with the software packages used in the production processes and in project management.

  • An awareness of the commercial implications of project management decisions.

  • The ability to communicate effectively with customers at all management levels.

  • The ability to recognise further business opportunities for the company.

  • Knowledge of security procedure.
