Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council is seeking a qualified and experienced Health and Safety Adviser to join our Risk and Audit Team within the Finance Directorate. You will support the Corporate Health and Safety function by delivering expert advice, policy development, site inspections, and incident investigations to promote a strong health and safety culture across the Council and its schools.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the Health & Safety Senior Officer in delivering the Council's health and safety strategy and improvement plan

  • Conduct audits, inspections, and reviews across council buildings and schools

  • Provide formal feedback and practical recommendations to address safety concerns

  • Deliver training and guidance to colleagues on health and safety policies and legislation

  • Monitor incident reporting systems and support RIDDOR investigations

  • Act as a point of contact with enforcement authorities and insurance partners

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and statutory duties

  • Support and advise schools under the Service Level Agreement, including overseas visit approvals

  • Deputise for the Health & Safety Senior Officer when required

Essential Skills and Qualifications:
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (Level 6 or above)

  • Certified Member of IOSH (working towards CMIOSH desirable)

  • Demonstrated experience in health and safety advisory roles, ideally in public sector or education settings

  • Strong working knowledge of regulations around asbestos, legionella, fire safety, gas, and electrical safety

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to write clear and concise reports for a wide range of stakeholders

  • Current driving licence and access to own vehicle
