Wincanton is now looking for a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) to join our team and to ensure the company`s adherence with DGSA and associated regulations across the business on a fixed term contract until the end of the year.

You will have an important role in the Business Continuity Planning (BCP) and implementation of effective recovery plans with the sites.

This is an on-site role Monday to Friday; however national travel and flexibility is required. You will be based at our Training Centre, Bittesby House in Lutterworth.

How will you contribute?

  • Monitoring compliance with the requirements governing the carriage of dangerous goods. This would primarily focus on CDG (Bulk) and ADR (Road), Sea (IMDG) and occasionally Air (IATA) for retail contracts. 
  • Advising stakeholders and customers of the undertakings on the carriage of dangerous goods. 
  • Supporting the development and implementation of site procedures and processes to ensure compliance aspect such as marking, labelling, and packaging requirements are met relevant to the mode(s) of transport of dangerous goods. 
  • Maintaining Group Dangerous Goods Compliance, including identifying gaps in guidance, policy, annual reporting, training, and regulatory changes.
  • Supporting investigations involving dangerous goods and non-conformances and implement strategies to prevent re-occurrence. 
  • Preparing and delivering Dangerous Goods Awareness training to sites and customers operations that are involved in the transportation of dangerous goods. 
  • Responsible for the group security plan and working with bulk contracts to ensure all aspect of security measures are in place and enforced. 
  • Key emergency contact for bulk contracts and supporting with conducting investigation into public reports of non-compliance, incidents, or complaints. 
  • Review and prepare for intervention visits planned by the HSE and support site operators during these visits. 
  • Monitor and maintain Major Accident Prevention Policies where applicable. 
  • Demonstrates expertise in developing, implementing, and maintaining a Safety Management System for Dangerous Goods operations. 
  • Support site operations and the new business implementation team with storage related issues, segregation policies and any non-conformance.
  • Working closely with the Central Auditing team to review function specific aspects and drive improvement across the business.

  • Able to manage a team of experienced colleagues for emergency response and act as the overseeing page holder for all incidents and accidents involving high consequence goods.

  • Able to combine a range of strategic and hands-on tasks and manage a diverse workload.
  • Strong knowledge of DSEAR and the ability to complete risk assessments, site inspections and provide expert advice on legal and industry guidance surrounding the storage and handling of retail dangerous goods. (i.e. BAMA, HSG148, HSG71 etc.)
  • DGSA qualifications
  • Strong knowledge of COMAH Regulations and support to 2 Lower Tier warehouse sites.
  • Strong understanding of both fully regulated and exempt dangerous goods prescribed for transport (i.e. Limited Quantities, Excepted Quantities, Special provisions)
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 27001 (desired but not essential)
