The Opportunity:

Avantor is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Environmental Monitoring Scientist Apprentice to join the team based in Macclesfield, UK. In this apprenticeship you'll support the day-to-day workload and output of the service team whilst providing excellent customer service.

As part of your training, you will be required to complete a three-year Level 5 Technician Scientist Apprenticeship course, leading to a BTEC Level 5 HND in Applied Science (Chemistry pathway).

This role will be a full-time, apprenticeship position based in Macclesfield at the customer site. Most of the learning will take place online one day per week, with some practical elements taking place in Sutton Coldfield (one week per year) throughout the duration of the 3-year apprenticeship. Working hours

Monday to Friday with flexible starting hours between 7:00 & 9:00 - 15:00 & 17:00

The team

You'll work in a cooperative setting with 2 colleagues, where everyone pulls collectively to achieve a common goal in supporting our environmental monitoring lab. You will belong to our business department Lab and Production Services, which supports leading pharmaceutical companies and laboratories all over the world, in Research and Development within the Life Sciences industry.

What we're looking for
  • Education: Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above (including Maths and English Language). Chemistry (required) and Maths (desired) A-levels or Level 3 BTEC applied science qualification
  • Experience:
  • Full training will be given, no working experience required.
  • Ability to understand and follow Health & Safety instructions
  • Computer Literate
  • Capability to communicate effectively, process driven and high level of attention to details

How you'll thrive and create an impact
  • Willingness to engage in variety of tasks such as liaising with the customer to understand the demand for analysis and schedule work required to agreed deadlines.
  • Analysing daily effluent samples on a weekly basis & preparing monthly summary data on industrial wastewater emitted from the site and attending regular wastewater review meetings with the customer on behalf of Avantor
  • Testing of breathing air quality at points across the customer site & perform environmental noise assessment surveys as required.
  • Preventative maintenance, cleaning & documentation of several laboratory instruments
